Sink into Style: A Comprehensive Guide to Kitchen Sink Installation

by InArt .co.in on Mar 03, 2023

In India, the traditional method of installing a kitchen sink involves creating a recessed area in the countertop where the sink is placed. This type of installation is also known as a "sunken sink" or "Indian style" sink.

To install a sunken sink, a hole is cut in the countertop that is slightly smaller than the dimensions of the sink. The sink is then placed into the hole and leveled with a mixture of sand and cement. The edges of the sink are sealed with a waterproofing material, such as silicone.

The area around the sink is then tiled or finished with a water-resistant material to prevent water damage to the surrounding area. This method of installation is still popular in many parts of India, particularly in rural areas, and it is often used for both kitchen and bathroom sinks.

However, with the advent of modern kitchen designs and materials, other methods of installation such as top-mount and undermount sinks are becoming more popular in urban areas of India. These methods involve attaching the sink to the countertop from above or below, rather than creating a recessed area in the countertop.

  • There are three main types of installation for kitchen sinks:
  • Top-mount or drop-in installation: This type of installation involves dropping the sink into a pre-cut hole in the countertop, so the sink's rim rests on the countertop surface. The sink is then secured with clips or screws. This is the easiest and most common type of installation, and it works with any type of countertop material.

  • Undermount installation: In this type of installation, the sink is mounted underneath the countertop, so the sink's rim is not visible. The countertop must be cut to fit the sink precisely, and the sink is then attached to the underside of the countertop with special clips or adhesive. Undermount sinks give a sleek, seamless look to the countertop, and they make it easy to wipe crumbs and spills directly into the sink.

  • Farmhouse or apron-front installation: This type of installation involves installing a sink that has a front panel that extends past the edge of the countertop. The sink is installed so that the front panel is flush with the cabinet doors below it. Farmhouse sinks are often made of heavy-duty materials such as cast iron or fireclay, and they give a traditional, rustic look to the kitchen.
